Morning Session: Grade 6 & 7 Peer tutor training 30 students
Here we will teach them some basic patterns to teach the rest of the school:
Headband and 2 types of fish in coconut leaf + string from banana fibre + anything else we have time for.
Mid Morning Break
Until Lunch: Grade 5 & 4 & 3 30 peer tutors + 60 students
We divide these classes into small cluster groups and place 2-3 tutors to each group depending on the class size.
Stuart conducts the main lesson for everyone and then the tutors take on their own group and teach them.
Stuart and I circulate with the help of teachers and their teacher’s aides keeping an eye on the tutors and helping the students who need individual assistance.
Lunchtime Break
Afternoon Session: Grade 2 & 1 & preschool 30 peer tutors + 60 students
The same cluster groups created with 2-3 tutors to a cluster.
We teach a very simple fish and make a simple headband with coconut leaf
Peer Tutors
The 30 students from Grade 6&7 stay on with us all day as the peer tutors in small groups. The ratio of teaching tutors to a group depends on how many students in the class altogether. We usually put 2 -3 tutors to a cluster of 10 students. Using Peer teaching we effectively reach 120 students
Access and Site
We will arrive after 8am and we prefer to work in an open under cover area sitting on our ground mats
It’s great if the car can come through a gate to access the area where we can unload and prepare the fibre.
Outcomes
Each student walks away with their own string bangles, headbands, woven coconut leaf patterns etc
These patterns represent primary kinaesthetic building blocks of simple form; hence powerful left right brain exercises
Day Structure Proposal: for 60 students
