Ruby Ludwick :Yarrabah

DOB:

Birth Site:

Ruby lives at the Farm in Yarrabah. She has been married and had children and grand children here. Ruby has been part of the Art Centre and has missed the opportunity to sell through this centre when it closed down.  She looks forward to being part of the artist community that uses this centre and hopes it wont be long before it opens again. She intimates that she has not been making money since it closed, and is dependent on passing visitors to purchase her baskets from her at home. Every year before the Art Centre closed down she was able to put baskets into the Laura Dance festival: the Cape York Art and Craft Competition. She has exhibited all over the country & been respected for her work as a Master Weaver.

Ruby's knowledge of Pandanus weaving is extensive. She is able to get her own leaves and prepare them. The dyes she uses are at Yarrabah near the beach and in the forests &  her knowledge about different plants for dyes is extensive and valuable. Most indigenous weavers in the north of Qld have lost this knowledge. She is one of those big woman who does not want to see her cultural knowledge disappear. Hence her generosity to share with Rhonda Brim and the Djabugay weavers: who have lost much of their basket weaving knowledge. Ruby is a beautiful gentle warm hearted kind and generous person who reflects her culture's valuable contribution to the future of Australia and its eco systems. The Mona Mona weavers recognize her generous support as one of their Pandanus teachers: in their renaissance in Bama basket weaving 2008
